This is a story of Eli’s birth. Elijah was born on August 12, 2009. He came into this world 5 weeks early, but very healthy. He weighed 5lbs 10oz and was 18inches long. I was planning my first home birth when my water broke 5 weeks early. My midwife came to the house and we talked for almost 2 hours on what course of action we wanted to take. Should we stay and try for our home birth as we had planned, or should we go to the hospital incase medical attention was needed for the baby? Greg and I decided that we did not want to jeopardize the baby’s health (we did not know if we were having a boy or a girl). So off we went to University of Michigan in Ann Arbor MI to deliver our third child. After only 5 hours of labor Eli was born.
His birth was so intense and so wonderful at the same time. It was the first time that I had delivered without the use of an epidural. It was painful and intense, but only for a short time. For the most of the 5 hours it was very manageable. My midwife stayed with us until Eli was delivered by the resident OBGYN. Since I had not registered at the hospital before coming there that day I did not have a doctor and my midwife was not licensed to deliver in a hospital setting (only at home). Eli was very healthy and so perfect. I remember thinking how calm and serene the delivery room was. He was taken to the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) just to monitor his vitals and make sure he was healthy for being only 35weeks old. He did fantastic.
We had a very nice hospital stay and when my other two kids came to pick me up at the hospital they were in love right away. I have this picture of Leah and Jonah holding Eli for the first time. They were sitting by the hospital window and the sun was shining in. There is this light around the three of them that now just brings me warmth when I am overwhelmed by the cold. Leah was 4.5 and Jonah was 2 when Eli was born. I remembering bringing Eli home from the hospital and resting in my bed holding him and just smelling him. The scent of a new baby is so intoxicating. My family was so in love with Eli.
