Jonah has the chicken pox. It started with one bump (which I assumed was a bug bite) and spread and then spread…and finally spread some more until he had about 300 spots covering his body! I felt so bad for him, but he did quite a good job with not complaining much or scratching too much. We gave him lots of oatmeal baths! So anyways one night he went to bed only to be woken up about an hour later with a really nasty cough. He had no symptoms of a cold in any way…just the pox and he had not coughed all day. So I went up and gave him a drink of water and a couple of minutes later his coughing jag got so bad he almost got sick. I felt just awful. I hate when my kids are sick because there is not much I can do to make them feel better. But this was just awful for him and me…chicken pox on top of an awful cough. Jonah had been up the last couple of nights with so much itching that I did not want him up for coughing too. I placed my hands upon Jonah and prayed for him aloud that God would give Jonah rest and take his cough away.
I have prayed many similar prayers for my kids or myself when we get sick. But usually the sickness just stayed and that was fine; we dealt with it. But this time Jonah immediately stopped coughing (after about 25 minutes of hard continuous coughing), he slept through the night, and was completely 100% better with no more symptoms. His fever went away, his chicken pox stopped being itchy, and his cough all left within minutes of my prayer!!! It took me two days to put all this together with God’s prayer. I was telling my friend about it today and told her. “I think God answered my prayer.” I am very hesitant to state with conviction that God did indeed answer my prayer…WHY?
I know that he answered my prayer, but part of me is still so surprised that he did. I know that there must be so many prayers going to God every second that I feel like most of time I am not as much need as others. Or how can I really be certain when answered prayers are hard to measure?
So I wanted to write about this idea in my blog because I am sure some of you might feel the same. In John 15:7 it states:
But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted!
In, Matthew 26:41 God instructs us to pray. He wants us to have that one on one intimate relationship with him.
“Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!”
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
These were just a few Bible verses that address the topic of prayer. But God does not hope that we will pray…he instructs us to do so. Now that I am a parent when I ask my kids to wash their hands or clean up their toys; I want them to do what I ask. Just as God is our father and knows what is best for us; he wants us to obey him.
And who knows…maybe you will find yourself with an answered prayer along the way! God is so mighty!!!! I should not underestimate his mighty Love and Glory he has in store for us!!
